Haslemere Educational Museum

Haslemere Educational Museum is an award winning independent museum founded in 1888. The museum holds diverse collections relating to Geology, Natural History and Human History, as well as being a resource of local history. It is also recognised for its educational work with schools and its lifelong learning for all ages. The Museum offers a lively programme of events and exhibitions throughout the year, including special seasonal activities. The Museum’s facilities comprise three permanent galleries, education room, two temporary exhibition rooms, library, archive, lecture hall and garden. The Museum holds approximately 400,000 objects in trust for the public, which are of local, national and international significance. Our regular activities include an educational programme, outreach work, temporary exhibitions, early years, junior club, family events, teenage group, tea and talk, freshwater studies, visitor information centre, talks, tours, walks and lectures.

Children & Families

Visitors of all ages can explore our three galleries relating to Geology, Natural History and Human History. Interactives for children include quizzes, puzzles, toys and backpacks. Programming includes Early Years, Museum Explorers, HYPE Team (teenagers) and Family Events.

Special early opening hours called Early Birds are provided for families with children who have an Autism Spectrum Condition. The garden and grounds provide a wonderful opportunity to explore our green space and engage with the environment. During the summer period the observational beehive is open to visitors. Special seasonal events include Haunted Haslemere and Santa’s Victorian Parlour.

Schools & Teachers

Formal workshops for schools may be booked with the Education Officer. Outreach can also be undertaken by appointment. We have a large variety of sessions for Foundation to KS2 including Humanities (e.g. Egyptians, toys, Greeks) and Science (e.g. rocks and minerals, skeletons) based on the Museum handling collection and gallery displays. Loan boxes on various subjects can be hired for use by schools for supporting classroom work.

Students & Young People

Opportunities by arrangement for work experience, graduate and post-graduate students.

Adult & Community

Programming for adults includes exhibitions, formal lectures, talks, tours and well-being craft workshops. Tea and Talk sessions are informal gatherings specifically aimed at the retired age group. The Museum’s reference library and archive room are open on Tuesdays. Local group meetings and events are hosted at the Museum, including special interest groups and community organisations.

The Museum also provides a venue for private hire. In addition, the Museum presents opportunities for volunteering. Visit Haslemere is operated by the Museum and provides information about the town and local area.
