The Museum of Military Medicine

The four collections of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC), Royal Army Dental Corps (RADC) and Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) are held at the Museum of Military Medicine on Keogh Barracks, Mytchett, Surrey.

The Museum tells the story of army medicine and healthcare, human and animal, from the English Civil War to the current day as Army Medical Services personnel continue to serve across the globe as part of the British Army.

The collections on display include uniforms and insignia, medical, dental and veterinary equipment, ambulances and much more besides. The Museum not only houses a fantastic collection of artefacts, but also an extensive library and archive that records the many stories of those that have served and their achievements.

Surgical instruments, medicine cabinets, gas masks, branding irons, the striking watercolour portraits of Waterloo casualties by surgeon Sir Charles Bell, and an iron lung are among some of the intriguing objects on display.

Did you know that a woman once posed as a man to be an army doctor? Or that army vets treated
camels as well as horses and dogs?
Find out how army nursing started well before Florence Nightingale, how deserters were tattooed,
and how false teeth were made from animal horn. You can even see the tools Napoleon’s dentist
used while treating the exiled dictator on St. Helena! We offer trails and puzzles.
