Meet Roamin' Rex

Roamin’ Rex has been travelling through time for many years before he landed in Surrey in the Summer of 2024. He has roamed the land with cavemen, marched with the Romans, cultivated the land with 16th century farmers, and cycled through the Victorian period.
The Wheels of Time Scheme began in Kent in 2015 and quickly spread across 57 museums and heritage venues in the county. Thanks to an Arts Council England grant, the initiative has been expanding beyond Kent into Essex and now into Surrey through collaboration Surrey Museums Partnership and our partners.
And so we launched Surrey Wheels of Time in our first 12 museums and galleries last summer and they have been welcoming local explorers since. If you have young explorers aged 5-11 who love collecting stuff, then why not visit one this Easter and go in search of Roamin’ Rex. Surrey has a fantastically rich and varied history and you can explore such interesting collections from fossils to fashion and everything in between by following in Roamin’ Rex’s footsteps…or bike tracks.

Haidee Thomas, the Museum Engagement Officer for Surrey Museums Partnership, shared her excitement about the Wheels of Time initiative: “Our museums and galleries absolutely love teaming up for countywide trails and activities. They’re always on the lookout for new programs that children and young people will enjoy, so it was perfect timing when Kent Wheels of Time wanted to expand. Our first group of 12 museums and galleries were super excited to kick things off last summer and with the scheme’s 10th anniversary this year and a special 10th Birthday Badge to earn, we can see it growing across the county with even more places to visit!”

SMP and participating museums are grateful that all this has been made possible with the support of the Kent Wheels of Time team through their Arts Council England funded project ‘Time to Change’.
