Meet Roamin' Rex
Roamin’ Rex has been travelling through time for many years before he landed in Surrey in 2024. He has roamed the land with cavemen, marched with the Romans, cultivated the land with 16th century farmers, and cycled through the Victorian period.
The Wheels of Time Scheme began in Kent in 2015 and has grown to include 57 museums and heritage venues across the county. Now, thanks to an Arts Council England grant, the initiative is expanding beyond Kent.
After collaborating with the Surrey Museums Partnership, we are delighted to officially launch the Surrey Wheels of Time scheme with its first 12 venues:
- Ash Museum
- Bourne Hall Museum
- Chertsey Museum
- East Surrey Museum
- Elmbridge Museum
- Godalming Museum
- Guildford Museum
- Haslemere Educational Museum
- Museum of Farnham
- Ripley Museum
- Rural Life Living Museum
- The Sime Gallery
Surrey has a fantastically rich and varied history and you can explore wide-ranging collections from fossils to fashion and everything in between through following in the footsteps of Roamin’ Rex.
From Monday 29th July 2024, young explorers aged 5-11 can visit any of the participating venues listed on our Wheels of Time website and collect one of Roamin’ Rex’s unique badges.
At the first venue, each child receives a lanyard to pin their fabulous badges onto. They must just make sure of one thing – to have their lanyard with them to show teams at all other venues to collect the rest of the badges.
It’s FREE to take part and easy to get started by registering here on our Collectors Portal. Then at each venue collect one of the unique badges, scan their QR Code and add a digital copy of the badge to the portal.
Collecting all badges will earn a Roamin’ Rex Annual Award.to be celebrated and presented at a participating museum of their choice.
Haidee Thomas, Surrey Museums Partnership’s Museum Engagement Officer, who convened Wheels of Time in Surrey, said: “Our museums and galleries love working together on countywide trails and activities for children. They always embrace opportunities for new programmes that children and young people will enjoy, and so it was perfect timing when the Kent Wheels of Time management committee said they were looking to expand. Having worked with Kent museums in the past, I knew first-hand how popular and powerful the scheme had been to participating venues and their young visitors. Our first group of 12 museums and galleries are very excited to get the ball rolling this Summer. And with the scheme’s 10th anniversary coming up in 2025, we can see it expanding across the county with more venues for children to visit and more Awards to claim.”

SMP and participating museums are grateful that all this has been made possible with the support of the Kent Wheels of Time team through their Arts Council England funded project ‘Time to Change’.
